If you’re wandering through the centre of Darlington and catch a delicious, spicy aroma in the air you’re probably not too far from a local legend – street food stall Falafel Fella.
In November 2017, the story of the young refugee from Syria who had been taken in by a Darlington couple, as beautifully told in the Northern Echo, suddenly became a talking point across the region.
Mouhyedin escaped from a country destroyed by war where he lost home after home, friends and loved ones, and was forced to abandon his studies. Facing forced enlistment into Assad’s army, his family arranged for him to flee to Lebanon. Through a United Nations resettlement programme, his long journey finally took him to Darlington in 2016. Mouheydin makes fresh falafel cooked in the traditional Syrian style, after a recipe of his mother’s. Falafels are balls made from ground chickpeas and a special blend of spices and herbs, which are then deep-fried in hot oil. He uses a special tool to mould them, called an aleb falafel. The cooked falafels are served either in a wrap or on their own, with salad and tahini sauce, which is made using sesame seed paste, soya yoghurt and pomegranate molasses.

I’ve had falafel loads of times but nothing like this. Absolutely amazing. I had a falafel wrap. Hot and crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. Great seasoning too. Lovely fella too.
We can’t recommend this guy enough! The loveliest young man ever. Selling the most delicious authentic falafel. If you’re in town and a bit hungry head over his way. And completely vegan too.
